Thirrili's National Indigenous Postvention Service
Thirrili's National Indigenous Postvention Service (NIPS) provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families impacted by suicide. NIPS operates at a local, state-wide, and national level to provide culturally safe postvention support.
Call NIPS on 1800 805 801 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The steps involved:
- once NIPS is notified of a loss of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person to suicide or other traumatic incident, the team assesses who is best placed to assist the family
- NIPS then work with local Elders, community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to ensure a community response is put in place to support bereaved individuals and families
- NIPS can travel to provide support if invited by the family or they can provide advice to Community Leaders, Elders, and local services on how best to respond.
