Postvention services

Thirrili's National Indigenous Postvention Service

Thirrili's National Indigenous Postvention Service (NIPS) provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families impacted by suicide. NIPS operates at a local, state-wide, and national level to provide culturally safe postvention support.

Call NIPS on 1800 805 801 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The steps involved:

  1. once NIPS is notified of a loss of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person to suicide or other traumatic incident, the team assesses who is best placed to assist the family
  2. NIPS then work with local Elders, community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to ensure a community response is put in place to support bereaved individuals and families
  3. NIPS can travel to provide support if invited by the family or they can provide advice to Community Leaders, Elders, and local services on how best to respond.
