Community Forum

About the event

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Suicide Prevention Collaborative is hosting a community forum about suicide prevention for community members. This forum is being delivered by Collaborative members Lifeline South Coast, Standby - Support After Suicide and Wollongong Safe Haven (Stride Mental Health).

The forum will discuss:

  • The importance of having safe discussions around suicide
  • Signs that a person may be having thoughts of suicide and how to respond
  • The importance of a kind conversation
  • Local and other supports
  • Ensuring you look after yourself.

The national and local supports available for people who are in suicidal distress and for people who have been impacted by suicide will be discussed.

Importantly, participants will hear from a speaker with a lived experience of suicide on the value of a kind conversation.

There will be a short Q&A on the topics discussed at the end of the session. See details below on how to ask a question.

The next community forum will be held on Wednesday 8 December via online platform.

Please read the forum guidelines below before registering to attend.

Forum guidelines and important information

Consider those around you. When deciding on a location from which to join the online forum, we ask all participants to consider if the space is private and not within ear shot of children or young people.

Age of participants. We recommend 16 as the minimum age of participants for this forum. Participants under the age of 18 should ensure they have supports in place before participating in the forum.

Ensure your wellbeing. Please enable the video function and ensure your name is visible for this online forum. This helps to create a more personal connection for all and is needed by organisers to ensure everyone’s wellbeing. If you prefer for this not to occur, please get in touch before the event to discuss other options for ensuring your wellbeing.

While organisers do not expect that the session will result in elevated or strong emotions for most people, some people, especially those with a recent lived experience of suicide, may be more likely to experience distress.

Please reflect on your personal experience with suicide and consider if now is the right time to be participating in the forum.

Support during the forum. If you need support during the forum, please let us know via private message on the online platform. You do not need to sit in distress, and it is important for us to know how you are.

Possible supports:

  • Lifeline 24/7 crisis support (13 11 14)
  • StandBy 24/7 support after suicide (1300 727 247)

Question and Answer session. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the forum presentation. Please note that the Q&A is not intended to discuss individual circumstances. You can submit your questions ahead of time by emailing them to suicideprevention@coordinare.org.au. If time permits, the presenters will answer questions posted in the chat.

Follow-up. Participants will receive a follow-up email within one week after the event. This email will include a summary of the question and answer session and links to some useful resources.

Feedback. We value your feedback on your experience of this community forum. A link to the feedback survey will be provided within the presentation slides and in the follow-up email. If you prefer, you can reach out via suicideprevention@coordinare.org.au
